Hypnosis is a normal state of mind we all experience many times a day, similar to how you may feel just before falling asleep at night or during a guided meditation

While experiencing hypnosis...
  • You will gain in self awareness
  • You can never be in someone else's power
  • You will always be in control
  • You cannot be made to do or say anything you do not want to do

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation that enables you to access your subconscious mind - home to your inner thoughts, fears and deepest emotions. Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to achieve a beneficial result, such as pain relief, removal of negative behaviour patterns or freedom from phobias.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and no one can be hypnotised against their will

While under hypnosis, you remain in control, with full awareness, at all times. You always have the power to open your eyes and return to wakefulness, or to reject any statements with which you do not agree.

Everyone has experienced hypnosis - we just don't always acknowledge it as such.

Have you ever caught yourself daydreaming and lost track of what's going on around you?

Has your mind ever wandered to a more interesting place while sitting through a boring meeting or class?

Have you ever been so absorbed in a book, TV show or other activity that you haven't realized how much time has passed?

These are all forms of hypnosis. The main difference between these types of hypnosis and purposeful self-hypnosis is the lack of specific motivations and suggestions toward a goal.

Hypnosis is so ubiquitous that it is common for people to disbelieve that they have been hypnotized at all the first few times they experience hypnotherapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does hypnosis work?

Will I lose control?

Can I be made to do some thing against my will?

Can I become stuck in a hypnotic state?

Will I be aware of what's happening?

How does hypnosis work?
Under hypnosis all outside distractions are eliminated and your attention is focused on the hypnotherapist's voice. It is this profound concentration that permits suggestions to guide you into your subconscious. The principal reason for its use is that under hypnosis you become aware of why you have your present behavioural patterns which are usually of archaic origin, and you are guided to adopt new, desired and beneficial ones.

Will I lose control?
No. Hypnotherapists do not have the power to control another person's mind. While under hypnosis, you will be free of the inhibitions that normally prevent you from accessing your subconscious feelings. However, you always remain in control of everything you say or do, and hypnotherapy cannot force you to reveal things against your will. Any suggestion that is contrary to your inner convictions will either be ignored by you or will cause you to come out of hypnosis.

Can I be made to do some thing against my will?
No! But what about all those stage hypnotists who make people prance around like chickens? Nightclub shows in which audience members are subjected to embarrassing or ridiculous acts are not representative of therapeutic hypnotherapy. The subjects in those situations could choose not to behave like fools, but they choose instead to go along with the act.

Can I become stuck in a hypnotic state?
No. The person being hypnotized is the one who actually has all the control. You can never be hypnotized against your will, and you can always bring yourself out of hypnosis whenever you desire.

Will I be aware of what's happening?
Yes. One of the most common reactions to someone who's been hypnotized for the first time is disbelief. Because hypnosis is such a subtle state that we all experience from time to time in our daily lives, often the only indication that hypnotherapy has occurred is the positive outcome.
